HEIC is the format iPhones have used by default since iOS 11. It squeezes photos into impressively small files, but plenty of software still refuses to open it — older Windows apps, many upload forms, some editors. PNG is the opposite: a little heavy, but it opens absolutely everywhere and it is lossless, so nothing more is thrown away when you convert.
