GIF is a 1980s format with hard limits: a palette of at most 256 colors and all-or-nothing transparency, where each pixel is either fully opaque or fully invisible. PNG is lossless, holds millions of colors, and supports smooth 8-bit alpha transparency — which is why it became the default for logos, icons, screenshots and other flat graphics.

Animated GIFs become still images
PNG is a still-image format, so this is the one honest catch: converting an animated GIF produces a single non-moving frame. What PNG can and cannot fix
The conversion itself is exact: every pixel of the GIF is carried into the PNG unchanged, and from then on the image never degrades again, no matter how many times you re-save it. What conversion cannot do is restore detail the GIF already threw away — if the original shows banding or dithering from its 256-color palette, the PNG will faithfully preserve that look.
Expect file size to shift, too. Flat graphics usually stay compact, but photographic content often grows as a PNG, because lossless storage simply costs more bytes than GIF's tiny palette. Yes. GIF's on-or-off transparency carries straight over, and PNG can store it natively. The converter preserves exactly what the GIF contains — it will not invent soft, feathered edges that were never in the original.
